Hi, I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled aug 31,2007. I am so scared. The person who is doing it is a Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. When I had my appt thurday instead of pulling 2 he is going to do all 4. He said he is going to put me to sleep which I was a little mad because I am scared. When he puts me under will I still be able to hear and just be sleepy or will I be just out of it?? What is the difference between being put under and laughing gas. Because when I had laughing gas before I was very sleeping but still opened and closed my eyes. Can anyone give me details who had this done before?

Reply:I got two of my wisdom teeth pulled in one visit, they gave me pain medication which I didnt even need, its no big deal dont even worry about it, being put under is worst then laughing gas because they are taking you near death and you will be crashed out.

Reply:I%26#039;ve had it done. They knock you out completely. When you %26quot;wake up%26quot; you will still be groggy. (make sure someone can drive you home) It will be a little sore for the next week or so, but they should give you some nifty little pain pills. Just don%26#039;t get dry sockets (I didn%26#039;t, and I even drank/smoked a little after getting them yanked) and you%26#039;ll be fine. Matter of fact, my bottom ones were buried under the gums and growing sideways (towards the middle of my mouth) and even they were fine.

Reply:you will be able to feel and hear what%26#039;s going on around you depending on the drugs he/she is using. Usually in this case you need to be awake and alert while he is operating so he will probably give you light gas. But don%26#039;t worry about you won%26#039;t feel a thing until it%26#039;s over and done with.
Reply:if you are receiving anesthesia, which you should be, then you will be entirely asleep.
you will not be aware of anything, and you will wake up after the procedure with no recollection of it.
anesthesia is no big deal and is just like going to sleep.
this is a very simple procedure with extremely small risks.
they may strike a nerve which could make your mouth a little tingly (will not be permanent 99.9% of the time). theres the chance of fracturing surrounding teeth or bones. this can be fixed and should not be a problem.
overall, the risks are very small and any resulting problems can usually be corrected.
it is a very simple procedure and all will go well!

Reply:i have had mine out.. i didnt want to be put to sleep but they gave me so much overcane that i blacked out from it.. i didnt remember anything that happened.. i feel alsseep well blacked out then just woke up... i didnt see or hear anything.. and it hurts for about 1 to 2 weeks after you get them pulled... i know the stuff they gave me is a newer way of doing it.. it helps me come out faster and is supose to help with the pain.. when they put you to sleep they tend to keep you there for about 1 to 2 hours after they are pulled to make sure you are ok.. also someone is supose to drive you.. you will be totally out of it when you are all done..

Reply:Don%26#039;t be scared, it is easier than you think. Sometimes before they put you to sleep they will give you some gas just to calm your nerves. Then you go to sleep, and then wake back up. It is actually pretty cool. I had 4 wisdom teeth pulled plus one that was growing sideways underneath my other teeth. Just make sure you rest the first couple of days afterwards. You won%26#039;t be able to hear anything. It is almost as if you blink your eyes and it is over. Mine was done by an oral surgeon.
You will do just fine.
Reply:I got my wisdom teeth out (all local anesthetic, no gas or sedation) and was good the next day.
My advice is don%26#039;t worry about it, make sure you are comfortable with your oral surgeon (I switched from the one my dentist recommended), make preparations for getting better (I stocked my house with liquid/soft foods that would help me heal, Bananas do wonders). You may want to ask if it is really necessary to get all four out (I asked and it worked out and only got two taken out).
Just relax, I literally was on my feet the next day and never had to use the prescription painkillers provided by my doctor.

The only thing you%26#039;ll feel is a tiny pinch in the arm (even less if they use ethyl chloride to numb the skin first). Then you%26#039;ll start drifting, such a better feeling than laughing gas...you%26#039;ll be like %26quot;ahhh, this is nice...%26quot; and the very next thing you know is that you%26#039;ll open your eyes and wonder why all of these people are in your bedroom!!! Your mouth will be numb, you%26#039;ll feel no pain, and I%26#039;ll bet you%26#039;ll keep asking %26quot;What? It%26#039;s done? You took out all 4? No way!%26quot;
Reply:First of all - Having your extraction done by an oral surgeon is the right choice. If your insurance will cover general anesthesia then you will have a much better experience. You probably wont remember much, which is good. You will just fall asleep, and then your doc or the assistant will wake you when the surgery is over. You%26#039;ll be pretty groggy after, and sleep pretty much the rest of the day. (plus you will be taking your pain meds which will make you tired) Just make sure that you follow your pre-surgical instructions and don%26#039;t eat or drink ANYTHING before surgery. Not even a glass of water- the anesthesia will make you sick unless you have an empty stomach. Don%26#039;t be scared- You%26#039;ll do fine. At least you%26#039;re doing all 4 at once- then you don%26#039;t have to go through it again. Hang in there! (I worked for an oral surgeon so I know you are nervous. You%26#039;re not alone) By the way- I had mine out too. It%26#039;s not the greatest experience - But not the worst either. Good luck!
Reply:I just had mine done 4 days ago, and I was just as scared as you! I had the same type of surgeon. Trust me, you want to have all 4 done at once, because it would be a lot worse to go through it twice! Being asleep is amazing! They gave me laughing gas before they put the IV in and I was out until a little bit after my teeth were out. My surgeon also gave me a shot in the gums after I was put out, so it took a long time for me to feel any pain, even after I came out of it. Expect your jaw to be stiff and don%26#039;t try to eat anything that requires chewing for a couple days. Take the pain meds they give you. They will help you sleep AND you will definately forget about the pain! You will not hear a thing! The day of surgery is not so bad, but expect to be swollen worse the day after. It will go down gradually. Use ice the first day and make sure to do the salt water rinse and the antimicrobial rinse they give you as they will help to prevent any infection. Follow the post operative directions they give you and you will be fine!

Is having wisdom teeth pulled painful?
I%26#039;m 22 years old and i was told my wisdom teeth are making the front teeth crooked so i must to have them removed as soon as is possible of course by a surgery the problem is that the thought of having a surgery on those four teeth make my whole body shaking. I heard it%26#039;s so painful and since they are at the back of the mouth i guess pulling them is nauseous most of the dentists look like monster in here (Iran) they are not good at thair jobs and the medicine which they inject into the gum in order to make it numb dosen%26#039;t work well first thay crumble the tooth and then...! Anyway i must to overcome my fear somehow i have no choice but to make an appointment. tell me your own experience and give me some confidence i don%26#039;t like to put it off any longer. what would you do if you were me?

I have had all of mine out. Three impacted ones were removed under general anaesthetic and when I woke up my chest was really painful, I swear the dentist kneeled on my chest to exert force to pull the teeth, although he said he didn%26#039;t. That was a long, long time ago - 40 years maybe!
The last one was removed by my current dentist and was not painful at all with the usual injections etc. You could ask for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as a pre-relaxant.

I opted for the painkilling injection. As I was concious, I was aware of two people holding my head steady whilst the dentist removed the tooth. As the roots on my tooth were twisted, the job was a little more difficult but I felt no pain at all. However, the sound of the tooth cracking was a little unpleasant.
I went home immediately afterwards and took painkillers before the effects of the painkilling injection wore off. The bleeding was very minimal and I kept a small piece of cotton wool in my mouth. I slept relatively well and had no trouble/pain the next day.
I suffered for over 2 years before having one tooth removed and I%26#039;m really glad I did. If I were you, I would ask my friends, family, work colleagues etc if they know anyone who has had wisdom teeth removed and if they would recommend a particular dentist/hospital.

anyway.. the extraction itself should not be painfull... sometime the place where the anesthesia injected is wrong, that%26#039;s why it don%26#039;t work properly, not because it%26#039;s a bad quality.

They just told me to take 2 ibuprofen, maybe 3. And drink cold things, and if you eat something hot like soup...make sure it%26#039;s not too hot, that will cause it to bleed more. They also told me to put an ice pack on my jaw for 20 minutes every 2 hours, it helps the swelling go down. So far so good. So i would deff. reccomend getting your wisdom teeth pulled. If they are coming in, and you dont get them taken care of, it will cause you to get an absess, and if you don%26#039;t take care of that, the harmful puss in the absess can go down into your heart and kill you. I%26#039;m not lying, i%26#039;m serious. That happened to my friends grandma. So it does%26#039;nt hurt, just take medicine! get them suckers pulled! good luck!

Does getting your wisdom teeth pulled out hurt?
I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled out soon. They are pointing towards my other teeth and aren%26#039;t out of my gums yet. The dentist said they are going to have to dig in to pull them out, and after there would be a big hole in my jaw bone, so they have to fill it with bone marrow. I have a couple of questions.......
1. What do they give you to numb the pain? (I am going to be awake.)
2. How long is the procedure?
3. What does it feel like when they are pulling out the teeth?
4. What can I eat afterwards?
5. How long does it take to heal?

When my sister got hers pulled, they came RIGHT out and she couldnt believe it was over so fast.
But then...my dad had to get STITCHES after he got his pulled...
Sometimes they have to cut the teeth out.
Sometimes they just come out with a pull...
It can take awhile, or it can be done pretty fast.
Reply:I only had one pulled because mine came in fine. They numbed me up with novicane. Then he just pulled it. Dentist made sure I was completely numb before starting the procedure. He then pulled the one tooth. I did not feel anything. I could feel his hand hitting my mouth a little but that did not hurt. He then put gauze in my mouth and you have to keep that in your mouth for like a day. DO NOT take gauze out early. I did that and a bunch of blood came spewing out. Remember to eat a lot before going to dentist because I could not really eat with gauze in my mouth. I started to get weak after a day of not eating. After first day you will be fine.
Reply:When I had mine pulled, they gave me two valium an hour before the procedure. They shot me up with nova-cane, 4 shots in each tooth. Each tooth lasted only a minute or two each.
Its weird, because they are yanking and pulling. You can kinda feel it when they pull it out, you don%26#039;t feel the pain, you just feel a relief of pressure. Also, you can feel the resistance when they pull, and the relief when the tooth is out.
As far as eating, you aren%26#039;t going to eat much afterwards. When I was done, I got home, and I was knocked out for about 16 to 18 hours. When I got up, I ate soup, and soft foods for the first day or two. After that, I was ok to eat whatever.
Healing for me didn%26#039;t seem to take long. When you eat, you just have to make sure you rinse out the socket. If you don%26#039;t, it might not heal, and if it does, you will have problems, because the food will rot in the socket, and you will have really foul breath.

What you will feel and hear is pressure and you will hear cracking noise that is from breaking of the ligament that hold your tooth in place. They are very fast take them 2-5 mins a tooth. You will need to have ice package or frozen veg. for face. Soft foods to eat. You will not beable to go to work for 24 hours.

Is it possible to have your teeth pulled, even if they are in transit to being irreparable?
Let%26#039;s say this person had an eating disorder, like bulimia, and was convinced that their teeth were going to need to be pulled eventually. What would this person do? Surely a doctor would advise the patient that before considering pulling the tooth, they would recommend procedures (costly ones, at that) to repair the damage.
Could a patient then ask the doctor, or in this case a dentist, to remove the teeth because of possible (very appreciable risk over time) annihilation of all teeth?
I ask this because I know my teeth are eventually going to be pulled, they are in disrepair right now but not altogether foregone. I%26#039;d give them a year or two before every one of them needs to be capped. And even then, following the capping, I%26#039;ll need something similar to dentures.
Is it best to start now? I%26#039;ve been trying so... hard to fix this problem... I hate myself for vomiting, yet ironically I feel like I want to vomit more because of all the damage I%26#039;ve done.

You need to start at the root of the problem... the vomiting. Can you talk to someone about it? And maybe get some help? There%26#039;s nothing better than your own teeth for eating, speaking, etc... While I commend you for being honest, I also think you%26#039;re asking for help since you%26#039;ve posted your question here on Yahoo.....
Once the vomiting stops, so will the %26#039;damage%26#039; you%26#039;ve done to your teeth... and who knows... maybe they aren%26#039;t as bad as you think they are...

I am 12 and about a year ago I got 2 teeth pulled, I broke out in hives and freaked out! So today I got a tooth pulled and I freaked out and didnt want to open my mouth, I was bawling. {I freak myself out!}
My denist {Dr. Cherry} said, %26quot;Kyndell%26quot; and I was like, %26quot;What?%26quot;
He said, %26quot;Look at me! {i did} and he was like your crying makes my biz. look bad! Theres tons of little kids in here and they probley wont come back because of your crying!%26quot;

I%26#039;ve had 3 teeth pulled, myself. What helped me was hearing what one dentist would say throughout the procedure. He would ask me if I was feeling pressure, or pain. There is a big difference. True, pressure is uncomfortable, but pain is another story. I still don%26#039;t know what he would have done for pain (probably numb me more), but since I began to distinguish pain from pressure, I realized that it%26#039;s not that bad. The last thing most anyone will tell you is to concentrate on what%26#039;s going on, but I would advise you to just concentrate on it for a couple minutes next time your in the dentist chair. Doesn%26#039;t matter what the procedure (tooth pulling, filling, whatever), just think about what is going on and see if you can tell apart pain from just pressure. I find that in the back of my head, the automatic reaction when I feel something, and I haven%26#039;t been paying attention, the signal is pain. Whereas, if I pay attention, I can tell that it really doesn%26#039;t hurt. Everyone is different. Hope this helps.

What separates people, at any age is , courage, strength , and how they accept challenges that life throws them. At 12, you are no longer a baby and almost a teenager. Wow, how wonderful. Take a deep breath the next time you are in a position that makes you afraid. Relax, and draw that courage that is deep inside you and be an example to those younger kids in that waiting room. They will think you are amazing.

I am 12 and about a year ago I got 2 teeth pulled, I broke out in hives and freaked out! So today I got a tooth pulled and I freaked out and didnt want to open my mouth, I was bawling. {I freak myself out!}
My denist {Dr. Cherry} said, %26quot;Kyndell%26quot; and I was like, %26quot;What?%26quot;
He said, %26quot;Look at me! {i did} and he was like your crying makes my biz. look bad! Theres tons of little kids in here and they probley wont come back because of your crying!%26quot;
I was thinkin in my brain %26#039;ya these kids will never come back because of me...ya right!%26#039;
He%26#039;s a good denist but I freak out about tooth pulling...and he doesn%26#039;t like that!
What can I do?
I always get numed and that dont hurt just the pulling part!

I%26#039;ve had 3 teeth pulled, myself. What helped me was hearing what one dentist would say throughout the procedure. He would ask me if I was feeling pressure, or pain. There is a big difference. True, pressure is uncomfortable, but pain is another story. I still don%26#039;t know what he would have done for pain (probably numb me more), but since I began to distinguish pain from pressure, I realized that it%26#039;s not that bad. The last thing most anyone will tell you is to concentrate on what%26#039;s going on, but I would advise you to just concentrate on it for a couple minutes next time your in the dentist chair. Doesn%26#039;t matter what the procedure (tooth pulling, filling, whatever), just think about what is going on and see if you can tell apart pain from just pressure. I watched both, and I%26#039;d have to say the Cowboy%26#039;s game was more exciting and more impressive. HBK was close though!
