I have a new dentist who when he pulls my teeth he injects a needle into my nerve by my tooth to numb it. I almost go flying out of my chair. It hurts so bad. I told the dentist I never was afraid of needles to pull teeth till now I have never felt this kind of pain before. It is truly excrutiating. I am not a wimp with pain either. He said all dentist put the needle in the nerve so it numbs faster. I don%26#039;t ever recall a dentist hurting me like this from a needle to numb my mouth for extraction. I was never afraid to go to the dentist to have a tooth pulled because the needle never hurt. Now I am petrified to go back to him. Have any of you ever had this experience? Thanks
I have been going to a new dentist. When he pulls my teeth he injects a needle into my nerve to numb it. My?
He is partially right, but not completely. Yes, alot of dentist do inject into the nerve of a tooth when they are doing a root canal or an extraction, and are not having alot of success getting the tooth numb the traditional way. However, most try to get the tooth as numb as possible before jabbing a needle into the nerve. I have also seen patients jump out of the chair when dentists I have worked for have done this. If a tooth isn%26#039;t getting numb the conventional way, then sometimes this is the best, surefire way to get it numb. Hurts like heck, of course, but is a pretty guaranteed way to numb it.
I hope he at least tried the conventional way first and didn%26#039;t just jump into this way. This is a last ditch attempt to numb a tooth, not how you start out numbing one.
Reply:You do want the area numb, I know what you mean, numb me so I won%26#039;t feel that thing going into my gums, right? My dentist used that to numb, also gas, but the best thing he ever used on me was this gel like stuff that they apply with a cotton swab, that numbs fast and my lips were almost numb, my bottom lip got so numb it wouldn%26#039;t stay still, it was like as if shivering (no, it wasn%26#039;t cold, just numb). Ask if they have that, sorry I don%26#039;t know what the stuff is called. I%26#039;m on meds. for seziures (epilepsy), usually grand mals and one of them make teeth harder to pull. That would be the Dilantin. I%26#039;m on Phenobarbitol %26amp; Valium to help control seziures.
Good luckk on your next visit.
Reply:The stuff on the cotton swab that the 2nd answerer was referring to is call a topical anesthetic. It%26#039;s like prescription strength Ambesol and works wonders. They just dab it onto the swab and place the swab in your mouth for about a minute. Don%26#039;t be afraid to ask your dentist to use it. If he doesn%26#039;t have any or doesn%26#039;t like to use it, perhaps you should look for a new dentist that does. Especially since this dentist hurts you so badly.
Best wishes!
Reply:I%26#039;ve never had that experience..but I would see about getting another dentist!! If it does deaden it faster..well I know I sure just wouldn%26#039;t mind waiting instead of getting a shot like that!!
